Chapter 36 of the International Aerobatic Club holds two events each year - the Hammerhead Round Up in the spring and the Akrofest in the fall. Both of these events are held in beautiful Borrego Springs, CA. Here you will see what most might call amateurs, but in reality these folks are professionals in everyway except for pay. This is where grassroots competition comes to life and you can see sport aerobatics up close and personal.

The premier warbird airshow in the United States is just around the corner. Get your tickets early! There are many rare and one of a kind warbirds to be seen at this show as well as current fighter jet demos and aerobatic routines from small single engine biplanes to warbirds and jets.
Enjoy some images from last years show...
On the first Saturday of every month the Planes of Fame Air Museum hosts a 'Living History Flying Day' based upon one of the aircraft in their collection. These events typically feature guest speakers who have some connection in history with the chosen aircraft. This month the airplane was the B-25 Mitchell and quite an appropriate with this being the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo during World War II. While the aircraft seem to take center stage, it is always the people who are the stars.
Lancaster California's General William Fox Field is a fantastic place for an airshow. This year it was even more spectacular with a bloom of wildflowers in the area that rivaled the aircraft for color! The USAF Thunderbirds were the star attraction and as always they wowed the crowd. The warbirds are always a favorite, and both Planes of Fame and the SoCal Wing of the CAF made big appearances. There were also numerous aerobatic pilots performing, including Vicky Benzing and her big noisy Stearman. If you missed this show, you can always see more images on my Facebook page by searching @craigremboldphotography in the Facebook search bar, or following any of the links on this site.
The Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA) Spring Club Event is always a fantastic place to see all kinds of vintage racing cars in the spectacular setting of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The Monterey Peninsula comes alive with racing numerous times year, but the vintage events can be the most wonderful, harkening back to the 'golden age' of racing. This year, the 50th anniversary of the Formula Ford series, saw a huge turn out of the feisty little open wheelers. Featuring the USAF Thunderbirds!
In addition to the Thunderbirds you will see warbirds from the Planes of Fame Air Museum, the Commemorative Air Force SoCal wing and aerobatic performers Rob 'The Tumbling Bear' Harrison, Greg 'Wired' Colyer, Paul 'Sticky' Strickland, Rob Holland, Bill Stein and Matt Chapman performing in everything from purpose built aerobatic aircraft , to vintage jet warbirds. There will also be static aircraft and automobile displays as well as an interactive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Exhibition. This is truly an outing for the whole family - I hope to see you there!
Look for a gallery of images captured at previous year's airshows.... coming soon!
Nellis AFB, Las Vegas NV. This is the place of legends, and Aviation Nation is the venue to see those legends. This year there was only one word on everyone's lips.... Phantom. This show marked the final 'official' appearance of the F-4 Phantom in USAF service. Technically these were QF-4 variants, but they were being flown by pilots and not as drones, so a Phantom is a Phantom no matter how you preface it. The rest of the show was fantastic with everything from a static Mi-26 Hind to vintage Warbirds and a tac demo including helos, Eagles, and 'Hogs'. If you missed it, ya shoulda been there!! Sears Point. Infineon Raceway. Sonoma Raceway. No matter what you call it, the racing is always fantastic! When you couple a classic track with classic automobiles, it makes for a great event - and the Classic Sports Racing Group (CSRG) Charity Challenge was that and more. The weather varied from sunny to cloudy with a short bout of rain. The racing was intense across the classes, with a very enjoyable intermission consisting of racing cars circulating the track with rides purchased to support the Sonoma Chapter of the Speedway Children's Charities. On Saturday evening, 3 September 2016, the Planes of Fame Air Museum held a celebration in memory of the life of the Museum's founder and curator, Ed Maloney, who passed away on 19 August 2016. At the conclusion there was a fly over by five of the Museum's precious aircraft in a 'Missing Man' formation. The airframes chosen are representative of the vision of Ed Maloney and of the Museum's mission statement : the Vought F4U-1A Corsair, documented combat history by two living fighter pilots; the Mitsubishi A6M5 Reisen, the only original flying example in the world; the Boeing P-26A Peashooter, the only flying example in the world, and one of only two in existence; the Curtiss built P-47G Thunderbolt, one of only two in existence, and of course the North American P-51D Mustang, the most recognized piston engine fighter and arguably the most important Allied fighter of World War II . This series of images was shot in the early evening of 3 September as these historic airframes quietly waited the solemn duty to come - the 'Missing Man' salute to the man who saved them from the scrapper. The family, the pilots and these aeroplanes are a living testament to the impact one man had on an entire community. Without Ed Maloney's foresight so much of our precious history would have been lost, and with the loss of these machines, the ability to reach out and touch a tangible link to those men and women who lived that history. Ed is no longer with us, but his vision and dream lives on through his family and his friends, and through the Museum that he founded in 1957 as "The Air Museum". Wings Over Camarillo is a small show on the coast of California that always has something to offer. From aerobatic performers like Tim Just and Vicky Benzing to flypasts of various warbirds and other aircraft from the SoCal Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, Planes of Fame, AAF and others. You can't forget all the static displays and the skydivers either. Airshows are tough to pass up ,but add in a weekend near the California coast and it is a must do event!
